At last the dark year is getting over. What a year it was full of pain and sorrow. There were blasts everywhere screams and political games. This was a dark cloud had lot of things which troubled all people. Terrorism, Economic Crisis, Elections and Recession man that was too much for a single year. Science and Spots stood high and provided some positives.
India’s first Individual Olympic gold medal and Indian cricket on the top were some positives. On the whole sports world, what a year it was… Michael Phelps winning 8 Individual Gold medal in a single Olympics, Usain Bolt the world’s fastest man took three Individual Gold medal and Rafael Nadal won Olympic gold dethroned his competitor Roger Federer after a big battle, Saina Nehwal broke into top 10, Abinav Bindra won first Individual Gold medal for India, Viswanathan Anand defeated Vladimir Kramnik of Russia comprehensively to claim the Championship, Lewis Hamilton become the youngest person to win Formula One drivers’ world championship, India won Under 19 world cup, Indian golfer Jeev Milkha Singh raced to the top spot, Indian Premier League attracted attention world wide.
Even Sports world had its own crisis like Shaun Pollack, Adam Gilchrist, Sourav Ganguly and Anil Kumble retiring from International cricket, Australian cricket going into a real soup. This year saw the decline of the dominators of the world cricket. India and South Africa broke the myths and Dethroned Australia from its glory. Suddenly Australia looked like a vulnerable side when they failed to prove them selves when they lost Series against India in 0-2 fashion, they managed to gain some confidence when they won home series against New Zealand in 2-0 fashion but then South Africa which toured Australia won first two tests and won the three match series leading Australia to a home series defeat after 16 years. There were nemeses in other sports too Roger Federer losing to Rafael Nadal was a big surprise to tennis fans. Pakistan had tough times this year since no nation wanted to tour them so they went without a single home test the whole year.
Science on the other hand had some positives and its own negatives. India successfully launched its mission to moon Chandrayaan as planned and proved their competency in Astronomy. The much debated Nuclear Deal was signed with US.
Politics had an ugly 2008, the only positive (??) was Barack Obama becoming 44th US President and was the first African – American President. In India it was ugly, West Bengal was the venue and Trinamool Congress Party chief, Mamata Banerjee revealed the ugly face of Indian politics when she protested against TATA’s Nano car project @ Singur factory and made TATA’s pull out from Singur and forced them to move out of West Bengal. Ratan Tata showed his character and proved that the TATA’s care about the employee’s more than money and moved to Uttranjal. He was the Man of the Year, who showed courage some of them where opening the Taj Mahal hotel in mere 24 days after terror strikes, Tata Motors’ Acquisition Of Daewoo and Tata Motor’s plant shifting from Singur to Uttranjal.
IT industry which was a dream venue became Hell and in the name of performance monitoring people where thrown out like waste papers and No where “Ethics” was even heard.
